Eyeglasses – lens edges keep cracking?
I purchased a beautiful new pair of glasses from Lenscrafters this past August and I’ve had nothing but problems ever since. First I found a deep scratch in one lens (I have no idea how it happened) – they replaced the lens for 50% off the price. Two weeks later there’s a crack on the edge of one lens on the same side as the arm. I took my glasses back to Lenscrafters and they replaced both lenses (technician noticed tiny cracks on the opposite lens as well. It’s only been another two weeks and both lenses have small cracks again on the side of the lens close to the arm. Why do these cracks keep appearing? Not sure if it makes any difference but my lenses are progressive and I have Versace frames.
It could be what you’re cleaning them with too. On polycarbonate lenses, if you get alcohol on the edges it can seep into the lenses and crack them apart. Also, the cracks could be attributed to whatever the progressive markings were cleaned off with before they were dispensed to you. At my office, we have a special progressive marking pen that removes the lines…but we have to be extra careful, because if they touch the edge of the lens, it will crack the lens apart. We don’t use them unless absolutely necessary.
Also, the last person suggested changing to CR-39 plastic or trivex, since you are wearing a progressive, do not downgrade to a plastic, upgrade to a trivex, you will get less distortion on the sides with a higher quality material. Trivex is also a much tougher material with a higher index than plastic. You’ll see better, and it will weigh 50% less.
