What is is about this ’structure’ that makes it more stable than…?
Hi, I took the time to draw you a little diagram

lets say the brown part is a hinge, intuition tells me that the ’structure’ above is more likely to buckle than the lower one when a force comes in from the top.
What is the reason for this? i have suspicions that it could be due to the friction between the two angled pieces, and/or the force is divided into smaller components..
If the diagram is not clear enough please say so, i will happily produce a better one

I would think the top structure would be more stable. The top structure would tend to act much like a reinforced concrete beam. The top part is in compression when the pieces on each side of the gap come into contact and the hinge at the bottom is in tension like rebar in concrete. This allows the bending moment to be carried across the gap.
The bottom structure has the load offset from the hinge which would cause the left side piece to drop creating additional tension on the hinge. There would have to be substantial deformation before the two beam pieces came in contact.
