What is a ’sun hat’?

Sun hats are simply hats with larger brims; the wide brim allows for better protection from the sun’s rays. While sun hats have come a long way in their appearance, they are still not considered a ‘fashion forward’ accessory. Sun hats have a function, and are not merely worn to be fashionable. However, many companies have taken into consideration that many men are interested in up-to-the-minute sun hats.

Parts of Sun Hats

Aside from a wide brim, a sun hat can have all or any of these specific details: ear flaps, visor, or chin fastener. A bucket hat has a wide sloping brim, and is one of the most popular types of hats in general. Bucket hats are also referred to as ‘Gilligan hats’, because the main character from the popular 1960s television show, Gilligan’s Island, frequently wore a bucket hat. Crushable hats are flexible and can be bent without causing damage to the hat and losing the hat’s shape.

Hats That are Not Sun Hats

Fedoras, baseball caps, berets, and newsboy hats are not suitable for protection from the sun. These hats are more fashionable in nature, but won’t offer you any protection. These particular hats do not shield your face, neck, and ears from the sun’s harmful rays. We are not suggesting that you do not purchase these types of hats. You can wear a plaid fedora with a button up shirt and nice slacks. Baseball caps are suitable for casual apparel or a ball game. More adventuresome men can wear a beret to add a bit of flair to their attire. Newsboy hats (or caps) have become more and more popular, and can be worn with a variety of outfits.

Hat Tips:

Wear sunscreen! Avoid the idea that a sun hat is better than actual sunscreen. Using both sunscreen and a sun hat offers double protection.

Opt for sunglasses. Sunglasses shield your eyes and offer added protection with a sun hat and sunscreen. Invest in sunglasses that have lenses made for UV protection.

Choose a neutral hat. Whether you’re fashion conscious or not, take note. Avoid printed hats if you are wearing printed shirts (i.e. Hawaiian). Examples of neutral colors include black, white, tan, and brown.
